May Crowning Ideas for the Home

May is the month of Mary. It is a tradition in the Catholic church to crown Mary with flowers during the month of May. It can be done at any time during the month, but May 1 (also known as "May Day") is a very popular day for it ;-) You can use real flowers, or make a crown from fake flowers. Here are some ideas if you're looking to have a May crowning at home!

Here's a tutorial on making a crown from fake flowers
on One Hour Craft. Blue roses would be a great choice of flower!

I love this idea for a May Crowning Snack! I found this
over on Praying for Grace.

over on Hang on Baby Jesus This is Gonna Get Bumpy.

And last but not least, check out these amazing cupcakes!
There are no directions about making them, but I thought they'd
be magnificent at a May Crowning! If any of you make them or
figure it out, let us know how to do it ourselves :-)
*Updated to say- Kate left us some directions in the comments!*

Another option is to bring flowers to a Mary statue at your church. This can be a really fun thing to do with the kids, especially if you pick the flowers yourselves first! :-)

  5. The cupcake crowns look like they're made of gumpaste.

Just find a basic crown template (or draw your own- just a zig-zag) and cut it out of paper. Roll out gumpaste (you can buy Wilton's, although I don't recommend tasting their products- *especially* their fondant! YUCK!), or here's a good recipe: http://74.125.113.132/search?q=cache%3AYOz9QcZPevgJ%3Awww.auiswiss.com%2Fpdfs%2FNLTlyoseGumpaste_22609.pdf+nicholas+lodge+gum+paste+recipe&hl=en&gl=us

(Sorry, I don't know how to shrink URLs!)

Anyway, roll out the gumpaste on a cornstarch dusted surface (fairly thinly), put your crown pattern on top, cut it out with a sharp knife, lift up the piece you've cut, and join the ends, making a crown. Use your fingers to smooth the join.

Let your crowns dry completely (at least 3-4 hours, preferably longer), and then paint with gold luster dust mixed with lemon extract, vodka, or everclear to make a paint. (Not water! That will dissolve your gumpaste.)

Here's a link to purchase luster dust: http://www.globalsugarart.com/search.php?search=gold+luster+dust&searchimage.x=0&searchimage.y=0

The colors on the tips of the crowns were also painted with luster dusts of varying colors. Global Sugar Art has those colors, too. Right, and the tylose that you'd need for the gumpaste recipe is available there, too. If you're lucky enough to have a baker's supply store close to you, you can get what you need there. Alas, I have to order most of my supplies online, as there's not a store near me! :(

    I hope that makes sense!
