Guest Post- Veggie Tales Cakes!

Hi everyone! Today I have a special guest post from my cousin, and my daughter's Godmother- Stephanie.

My little boy was turning 3 and my little girl was turning 1. Their birthdays are in the same month so we did one big party for the both of them. They both love Veggie Tales so I thought Bob and Larry cakes would be perfect!

I used 2 box cake mixes. One 9x13 to cut out Larry, and one 9 in. round cake (half of one box cake mix) for  Bob. With the other half of the cake mix I made 12 cupcakes.

I used paste food coloring (you can get it at a cake store or craft stores) to make green and red. First I did a crumb coat of thin frosting. Let it dry for 30 minutes- then do your final frost. After about 30 minutes I put plastic wrap on the cakes and used my hands to smooth out the frosting. I cut big marshmallows for the whites of the eyes and got black candy (off brand m&ms) for the black of the eyes. You could also use chocolate chips. Make sure the white of the eyes are touching (it looks better). I used white frosting for "glue" when putting the eyes together. I also used a small piece of cut marshmallow for Larry's tooth. The black of Larry's mouth is a tube of black frosting from the store. I also used a marshmallow for bobs month. I cut it to make it into the mouth shape after making it flat with my hands. The nose is just frosting I left out overnight to get a little hard and then made it into a little ball.

Use a "leaf" tip to pipe the green onto Bob. I used a small piece of marshmallow (covered in green frosting) for the stem and just piped on the frosting for the leaves.

I put the cupcakes on my cupcake tree. I got Veggie Tale gummies at Wal-Mart (it was available as Easter candy at the time) to put on top of them.

I did all of this the day before the party and I left it out. I didn't cover it or put it in the fridge. Everyone loved it!

Thanks so much for sharing, your cakes with us, Steph! :-)

  4. Jodi,

Sorry it took me so long to get back to you! Here's what Stephanie had to say:

Wedding cake frosting (it's a flicker frosting, great to work with)-

Dissolve 3/4 C. sugar in 1/2 C. boiling water. Cool and add 1/4 C. of meringue powder (can get at cake store and sometimes at Michael's craft store) and beat to peak. Stir in 1 pound powder sugar and beat until well mixed. Mix in 2 to 2 1/2 C. white veg. shortening. Mix in 1 t. vanilla and 1 t. almond (if you aren't going to color it you want to use white vanilla and white almond but, if your coloring it as I did on the veggie tale cakes you don't need to and can just use the other).

    Any questions let me know.

    Steph
