Celebrate Pentecost Sunday with "Pentecost Sundaes"

Ok, I just loved the Divine Mercy Sundaes so much that you can pretty much expect "Liturgical Sundaes" to become a staple here. :-) It's such an easy way to celebrate- no prep, just serving time and delicious celebration of Pentecost Sunday with your kids! (No cooking involved is such a big plus for me!)

I'm very excited about these Pentecost Sundaes because they are chock full of Holy Spirit and Pentecost symbolism. Do you see it?

Strawberry Syrup- red, the symbolic color of the Holy Spirit AND the Liturgical color of Pentecost Sunday. :-)

Dove Chocolates- dove, the most common symbol of the Holy Spirit because the Holy Spirit descended upon Jesus in the form of a dove at His baptism. (You can also get actual dove shaped candies in the wedding section of craft stores.)

Topped with a Fire Ball!- What, no cherry? fire ball, represents the 'tongues of fire'. "Then there appeared to them tongues as of fire, which parted and came to rest on each one of them." Acts 2:3

All served on Vanilla ice cream! Yum, Yum!

How do you celebrate Pentecost Sunday with your family? Leave your ideas and links in the comments! :-)

Holy Spirit Craft - Handprint Dove

Catholic ABC's Week: 13
Letter of the week: H
Theme: Holy Spirit
Saint of the Week: St. Helen
Craft: Holy Spirit Handprint Dove

As you all know, I love handprint crafts! For this one, start with a red piece of paper (the symbolic color for the Holy Spirit) and make a white handprint. Run glue up each finger (not the thumb) and attach a white feather. Add a yellow triangle beak and one googly eye- voila! A Holy Spirit Dove. The one above was made by my 4 year old daughter. The one below was made by my 2 year old son.

Grab Bag Ideas for the Letter Hh: (be sure to check out the Classroom Scriptfor directions on using the grab bag.) Horse, Hat, Hairbrush, Happy face, Hippo, Headband.

For More Resources, check out the Catholic Toolbox lesson plans for the Letter Hh. (Her Hh lesson is also on the Holy Spirit!)
Catholic ABC's

Catholic ABC's runs here at Catholic Icing every Wednesday with the new letter of the week. You can get the details of this program by checking out the Classroom Script. We will be taking a few weeks off from this at Christmas, but I decided to go ahead this week even with Thanksgiving. God bless!

Catholic Trinity Craft for Preschoolers

Catholic ABC's Week 3
Number of the week: 3
Theme: Trinity
Memory Verse- The Glory Be:
Glory Be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
Craft: Trinity Triangle

Materials Needed for Trinity Triangle Craft:
  • Popsicle Sticks (available in plain or in colors at the Dollar Tree)
  • Markers
  • School Glue or Glue Dots
  • A piece of yarn or string
Each child starts with 3 popsicle sticks. You can either use colored popsicle sticks, or have the kids color them with markers themselves.

We used red to symbolize the Holy Spirit (a very normal color symbol for the Holy Spirit since he came with tongues of fire and all) yellow for the Son (because the sun in the sky is yellow) and blue for the Father (because I think of the father as being up in the blue sky in heaven).

Write "Father" "Son" "Holy Spirit" one on each popsicle stick with a pencil and let you preschooler trace over it with a marker. I actually let my daughter use a sharpie marker, but it was highly supervised ;-)

I highly recommend having glue dots on hand for preschoolers because they're so easy to use and you don't have to wait for them to dry- it's instant! They're a good addition to your craft cabinet. Of course, you can also let them use regular school glue (which is washable). Either way, have them glue them together one at a time into a triangle shape. My suggestion is to let them glue it together their way (meaning if one of the words is upside down - whatever!)

Tie a string around it so it can hang up. My daughter took a LOT of pride in the fact that she colored the sticks, wrote out the words, and glued it together herself. I would say this is an excellent craft for a preschool aged child.

Gifts of the Holy Spirit Teaching Tools

Pentecost is coming up on Sunday, which is a great time to learn about the Holy Spirit! You might also want to teach your kids about the holy spirit around a baptism, confirmation, or when studying the trinity! Here are some crafts to help teach your kids or class about the Gifts of the Holy Spirit:

Who's Ready to Celebrate Pentecost?

Pentecost is coming up this Sunday- 50 days after Easter (the official end of the Easter Season). It is also the birthday of the church. On Pentecost, the holy spirit came upon the 12 apostles and gave them "tongues of fire". Because of this, the color for Pentecost is red and is often symbolized with fire. You also see a lot of doves for Pentecost because doves are the most common symbol of the holy spirit. Intrigued? Read up some more on Pentecost. Looking for some fun celebration ideas? Read on, my friends!

Lets start with the basics- wear red to mass! This is a fun tradition
I remember from being a child, and you'll fit in amongst
the red crowd in the pews- plus you'll match the priest! :-)

Try giving your kids red hots or fireballs as treats on
Pentecost so they too can have "tongues of fire". :-P

Make the church a birthday cake! May I suggest red velvet in keeping
with the Pentecost theme? These Pentecost cakes are from 4 Real
Forums. Tons of symbolism going into these- your family could learn a lot!

The Catholic Toolbox has multiple posts on Pentecost! :-)
Endless great links- don't miss these posts!

Gladdest Hours celebrated Pentecost with these great cupcakes
and more! Check out the post to see it all.

And don't forget about this Pentecost Coloring Page
from Sermons for Kids.
