The Stations of the Resurrection - Great Focus for the Easter Season

Have you heard of the Resurrection? They're also know as "Via Lucis", "Stations of Light", or "The Way of the Light". There are 14 stations, and they the counterpart to the Stations of the Cross. Every station is something that happened between Easter and Pentecost. Here they are:

Stations of the Resurrection (Via Lucis)
1. Jesus Rises From the Dead (Matthew 28:1-10)
2. The Finding of the Empty Tomb (John 20:1-10)
3. The Risen Lord Appears to Mary Magdalene (John 20:11-18)
4. Jesus Appears on the Road to Emmaus (Luke 24:13-27)
5. Jesus is Known at the Breaking of Bread (Luke 24:28-35)
6. Jesus Appears to His Disciples in Jerusalem (Luke 24:36-43)
7. Jesus Gives the Disciples the Power to Forgive Sins (John 20:19-23)
8. Jesus Strengthens the Faith of Thomas (John 20:24-29)
9. Jesus Appears by the Sea of Tiberias (John 21:1-14)
10. Jesus Tell Peter to Feed His Sheep (Primacy of Peter) (John 21:15-17, 19b)
11. Jesus Commissions the Disciples on the Mountain (Matthew 28:16-20)
12. Jesus Ascends into Heaven (Acts 1:6-12a)
13. Mary and the Disciples Wait in Prayer (Acts 1:12-14)
14. The Holy Spirit Descends at Pentecost (Acts 2:1-13)

You can go through with prayers for each station (just like
the stations of the cross) and this site has a great set you can
read from for children, and another for teens.
Also, here's a pdf you can print to go through the stations
(although this one isn't specifically for kids).

Family at Feast and Feria made a printable set of the

On Bookworm you can download some printable
for making a box with symbols for each station!
These could be used in SO MANY WAYS! :-)

Remember, it's still the Easter season until Pentecost! We observed lent for 40 days- we may as well celebrate for all 50 days of the Easter season as well! :-)

I found all these links via 4 Real Forums. Thanks for the great resources, ladies!

Meaningful Easter Activity for Kids - Empty Tomb Snack

I wanted to make a cute and religious Easter treat for my kids, but as most of ya'll know, I'm not much of a cook. Well, here's an idea for a sweet Easter treat that is no bake plus your kids can assemble them as a religious Easter activity!

Ingredients Needed for Empty Tomb Treats:
  • Graham Crackers
  • Peanut Butter (or icing if you have an alergy)
  • Small Chocolate Doughnuts
  • Mini Oreo Cookies
  • Shredded Coconut
  • Green Food Coloring

Prep the Snack:
Before you grab the kids for this Christian Easter activity, you might want to prep a few things. Take your shredded coconut and place it in a sandwich baggie. Drip a few drops of green food coloring in, and shake the bag until your coconut turns green. Also, cut off the bottom of your chocolate doughnuts.

Now you're ready for the fun to begin! Have your kids spread peanut butter on the graham cracker, and stick their doughnut "tomb" on. Then, take one mini oreo and twist it apart. Use the side with the icing on it to stick it to the front of the doughnut as the "rock" rolled away from the entrance of the tomb. Sprinkle some coconut "grass" onto the remainder of the peanut butter.

We also made some Easter banners from the leftover Stations of the Cross stickers we got at the Dollar Tree.

These we so easy to make, and came out cuter than I thought they would! Enjoy these Resurrection treats on Easter!

Don't forget to bring your Easter ideas to my Easter link-up!

No Need for a Lamb Mold!

In keeping with our "Focus on the Lamb, not the Bunny" Easter theme, I wanted to make some actual edible lamb treats of some kind for Easter. The food industry would like to pull the wool over our eyes and lead us to believe that we can't make a lamb cake without store bought mold, but we know there are greener pastures, right? Because I don't have a lamb cake mold, I started thinking... what kind of ba-a-a-rillant lamb desserts or Easter food could you make without a lamb mold of any kind? The internet actually turned up many answers to my sheepish question, so I herded some of them together for ewe! (Ok, ok, I'll stop with the ba-a-ad lamb puns and get on with the ideas now). ;-)

For you ambitious bakers out there, I just love
these lamb cake pops from Bakerella! :-)
Here's a cute lamb cake from Family Fun.
Again- there is no lamb mold needed to make this cake!

Make marshmallow "lamb tails" and package them with
these adorable printable labels with Can't Stop Making Things.
What's easier than that? I made these for an Easter basket stuffer.

Baby Club has directions on how to make these
adorable lamb cupcakes.

These cauliflower sheep were on flickr. So cute with
their black olive heads and black eyed pea eyes!
Wouldn't they be the cutest centerpiece to a veggie tray?

Rosa's Yummy Yums made these Lamb Rolls.
Wouldn't these be cute at Easter dinner?

Also, check out these Lamb Cinnamon Rolls!
What a great idea for Easter Breakfast!

These lamb cupcakes come from Family Fun.
I made them for Lydia's baptism (over 5 years ago! *sniff!*)

These lamb cupcakes from Cookies and Cups are super cute,
and you could totally skip the cupcake if you wanted!

Not only do I not have a lamb cake mold, but I don't have a lamb butter mold either. If you want a butter lamb and don't have a mold, you still have a few options.

First, find directions on making a
free form butter lamb on Taste of Home.

Also, check out your local grocery store because
it turns out they sell butter already shaped like a lamb!
I found these at Giant, and heard they were at Wegman's, too.

I can think of many foods that seem ideal for decorating edible sheep, including popcorn, marshmallows, shredded coconut, and squirty whipped cream. Hope your Easter prep is going well! Worthy is the Lamb! :-)

Printable Easter Countdown Calendar

Did you know that there are 50 days in the Easter season? Not one, but 50! That's even more days than there are in lent! The Easter season begins with Easter Sunday, and ends with Pentecost. In order to help my kids and I remember that the Easter season is an ongoing thing, I made this religious Easter countdown calendar which starts on Easter Sunday, and ends on Pentecost Sunday.

The best part about this Easter countdown calendar is that it's printable, and free for all of you!

Make sure you allow the image to download completely before printing, otherwise it may result in a half printing job. I'm sorry, but I cannot troubleshoot your printer problems with you- thank you for understanding. If you're having trouble printing, try downloading them first rather than printing straight from the doc.

This Easter calendar doesn't include calendar dates, so it's good for every year! Some days I included when drawing this calendar are Divine Mercy Sunday (which Pope John Paul II instituted as the second Sunday of Easter), all 8 Sundays of Easter, Ascension Thursday, and Pentecost. This is a great tool for teaching your kids about the liturgical year, so I hope you find a use for it!

How to use this calendar:
I'm going to have my kids mark off each day with a sticker. (I think I have a bunch of small Easter stickers left over from an egg dying kit around here somewhere). Other options would be coloring one square each day, or marking them off with "x's". You could also laminate the calendar with contact paper, or put it in a Dollar Store frame and then mark off the days with a dry erase marker. I also though about decoupaging it to a cookie sheet, and moving a magnet one square each day. It's totally up to you.

I'm definitely using these as a religious Easter basket stuffer at my house, too! ;-)

Just for fun, I'm also offering the Easter calendar in color, and it's also free!

The colored Easter calendar is available on a brand new special page for those who are subscribers of Catholic Icing! If you've already made yourself a friend of Catholic Icing by subscribing, just look to the bottom of this post in your reader or email, and you'll find a link to the "Subscriber Bonus Page". If you'd like to print the colored Easter calendar for free, but are not yet a subscriber, no problem! Subscribe here, or by entering your email address into the box below. Religious (and cheap!) Easter Basket Stuffers

There will be jelly beans and chocolate bunnies galore at our farmhouse Easter morning- have no doubt about that. However, I don't want to completely loose Easter morning to the "Easter Bunny". He can visit, sure, but then he needs to go back to his burrow (or wherever the heck he lives) and let us celebrate the rising of Jesus from the dead! Yay!!! :-)

Of course your local Catholic Shop or Christian Bookstore will have some cute religious stuff that would be great for Easter basket stuffing, but that's not always a financial option for me. Also, I just made a trip to my local Catholic shop, and wasn't impressed with their selection for kids anyway. My favorite place to shop for cheap religious stuff is at the Dollar Tree. Check out the cheap and religious Easter basket stuffers I found at my local Dollar Tree! (Note that products can vary from store to store, although they seem to largely carry the same things. It depends on what was ordered for that particular store, so the bigger your Dollar Tree the better your chances of finding a wider selection of things).

Check out these chocolate crosses!
(I think these white chocolate crosses would also be great to
decorate an easy Baptism cake with! Just ice the cake in
pink or blue, and plunk one of these babies right on top!
They could make cute first communion cake toppers, too!)

Also find chocolate praying hands and smaller crosses.
(I also saw these at Giant grocery store).

Here's my FAVORITE religious Easter find at the Dollar Tree-
Inspiration eggs! Aren't they adorable?! Check it out- they're full
of little candy crosses! I love the Jesus Easter Egg! :-)
Cute paschal lamb egg with flag and all! :-)

I also love these religious breath mint tins! The mints
inside of these are shaped like little fish!

Most exciting find- Catholic stickers at the Dollar Tree!
Some stores have 'em, others don't, but if yours does, stock up!
They come in Stations of the Cross, Lent, Mary, Jesus, Christmas,
and Mysteries of the rosary. They're not labeled, so you have to know
what you're looking at. They'll be with the Easter stuff.

I also think these little children's books would be a good
religious Easter basket stuffer for $1 each.

Or even 2 for $1!

In fact, my Dollar Tree had a whole end cap display of religious and biblical stuff that was right in the Easter section, obviously meant for basket stuffing.

You can also get fake flowers galore!
Ever heard the Easter legend of the dogwood tree?
If not, google it, and then get some for $1! :-)

I also found some cute religious Easter basket stuff at Michale's craft store. They have some really affordable stuff in that $5 and under aisle! Check out these wooden crosses I got for $1, markers and all! They make magnets. :-)

Michael's actually had tons of wooden crosses for crafting.

They also had several religious Easter books for children.
They ranged from about $5-10 each.
(Also, Michael's coupons for 40% off one regularly priced
item are available for printing all over the internet. I'm signed
up for something where they email them to me all the time.)

Also, don't forget about the internet as a resource for free or cheap stuff! You can print free prayer cards, books, coloring pages- all kinds of stuff!

Catholic Easter Basket Stuffers to Order:
Here's a cool Catholic Easter basket stuffer- have ya'll seen these rosary eggs? My mother-in-law introduced me to these, and they're adorable! The rosaries are quite tiny (the eggs are only about half the size of normal eggs). Sometimes you can get them from Catholic shops, but you can totally order them online for only $0.75 each, and you can pick your colors!

And of course, don't forget about homemade treats! I actually got this mold for making chocolate crosses and bibles at Michael's for just $1.99, and I can make as many religious treats as I want! (You can also order special molding trays for first communion pops as well!)

WILTON CROSS/BIBLE LARGE LOLLIPOP MLD 2115-4435

Religious cookies also rock, and I'm willing to bet you already have a cross shaped cookie cutter, and an angel, too!
 R&M Cross Cookie Cutter

Another great place to bulk order religious stuff (including craft kits) is from oriental trading. They have some seriously cute and affordable religious stuff for kids!

Celebrating the true meaning of Easter can be so much fun! Sometimes I run into people who don't want to ruin good fun by being all "religious" about it, but you can have so much fun with religious stuff! If you don't believe me, check out my Easter post from last year. My kids had so much fun making Easter story cookies! Like, the same amount of fun as they would have had making bunny shaped cookies- honest! Your kids will be happy to have religious Easter basket stuffers, too, just as long as you don't skip out on the jelly beans. ;-)

Hope ya'll enjoyed "window shopping" from your computer chairs today!

Disclosure- I am not in any way associated with the Dollar Tree, Michael's, or Oriental Trading. Just recommending stuff I thought you'd be interested in, but the links to Amazon are affiliate links. Thanks for your support! :-)

Frame a Prayer with Children

Catholic ABC's Week: 21
Letter of the week: P
Theme: Prayer
Saint of the Week: St. Peter
Craft: Prayer Craft

I was really torn about what the focus for "P" week should be, but ultimately decided on "prayer" because it's so important, and such a basic concept. :-) This is a craft Lydia made at our preschool co-op, and it has been a great tool to encourage us to pray together.

Materials Needed to Complete This Craft:
  • Jumbo Craft Sticks
  • Paint and/or other decorations
  • Printed off prayer of your choice
  • String
  • Glue
Start by gluing the Jumbo Craft Sticks in a square for your frame. Decorate as desired with paint, stickers, glitter glue, or anything else you'd like! Tie on a string for hanging, and then glue the prayer onto the back of the frame.

 (back)
Hang this up somewhere in your home to help you and your child remember to pray daily. Ours hangs on our china cabinet. Ya, we're classy like that. ;-)

Here are some other crafts you can find here on my blog that would also be great for the letter P:

Make a prayer book with kids. (I love this craft!)

And of course the Edible Papal Flag I ran on Monday.

Grab Bag Ideas for the Letter P: (be sure to check out the Classroom Script for directions on using the grab bag.) Peanut, Papal flag, Priest, Prayer card, St. Peter holy card or statue, plate, pen, pencil, pecan, parrot, my little pony, ponytail holder, popsicle stick, post-it note, potato, potato head, pretzel, princess, puppet, purse, puzzle.

For More Resources, check out the Catholic Toolbox lesson plans for the Letter Cc. (Her Pp lesson is on "Plagues")

Catholic ABC's runs here at Catholic Icing every Wednesday with the new letter of the week. You can find the details of the program here.
